Today on The Closers Inner Circle Podcast we’re talking about something that gets thrown around a lot in sales and business… mentorship. Everybody wants a mentor. Very few people actually understand how mentorship works. Mentorship is not about finding someone successful and hoping they pull you up with them. It’s a relationship. And like any relationship, it only works when both sides understand their role and put in the work.

The Closers Inner Circle Podcast with Denise Griffitts and Ben Gay III - What a Great Mentorship Looks Like

A mentor is not your manager, your accountability partner, or the person responsible for your success. If you’re expecting someone to build your career for you, you’re going to be disappointed. Mentorship doesn’t work that way. It’s not about being carried. It’s about being guided.

This is where most people get it wrong. If you want a mentor to invest in you, you have to give them a reason. Show up prepared. Take action on what they tell you. Don’t ask the same question twice, and respect their time. And just as important, bring value back. Even if you’re new, you can bring effort, energy, and a fresh perspective. Mentorship is not a one-way street.

On the other side, a good mentor isn’t just there to encourage you. They’re there to tell you the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable. They set clear boundaries, they don’t overextend themselves, and they teach you how to think, not just what to do. A real mentor helps you become independent, not dependent.

Most mentorships don’t actually end, they just fade out. Usually because there’s no follow-through, expectations were never made clear, or one person is doing all the work. Access without action is wasted opportunity, and that’s where a lot of these relationships quietly fall apart.

A strong mentorship is built on mutual respect, consistency, and real growth. Over time, something shifts. It starts to feel less like a mentor and mentee relationship and more like a conversation between peers. That’s when you know it’s working.

If you’re looking for a mentor, don’t just ask who can help you. Ask yourself if you are someone a great mentor would want to invest in. Because they are out there. But they choose people who show up, do the work, and take it seriously.
