Today’s episode came down to one rule Ben has never forgotten: never celebrate a victory you haven’t won yet.

He opened with Arnold Palmer, who was leading a tournament by four strokes with two holes to play. A friend called out from the ropes to congratulate him. Palmer walked over, shook hands, and accepted the praise — and then bogied the next two holes and lost. Palmer’s lesson, and Ben’s: “Until you have the trophy in your hands, you don’t have the trophy.”

Ben connected this to golf’s bigger truth — the only stroke that matters is the one you’re about to take. The ones behind you are done. The ones ahead don’t exist yet.

That lesson showed up in Ben’s own life in a big way. He and Zig Ziglar both joined a company called Holiday Magic on the same day in 1965 and spent a year competing in the same sales contest. On the final night, Ben drove to Mississippi on a favor for a friend, gave a meeting, and closed a room full of prospects. He didn’t think twice about it. Days later, he found out he’d won the contest — and that the margin of his victory over Zig was almost exactly what he’d earned that night in Mississippi. Zig had spent that same evening in South Carolina — holding his victory party, certain he’d already won.

Ben also shared how he almost got there at all. Early on, his mentor Bill Dempsey banned him from the sales meetings entirely — because Ben didn’t know the scripts and was accidentally destroying other people’s prospects. He was told to come back only when he could recite the full presentation word for word. Ten days later he did, walked back in with five prospects, and closed all five in one night — more than he’d closed in the previous six months combined.

The bigger arc of the conversation was about the people who shaped Ben. He watched Zig Ziglar speak the same presentation, with the same gestures, at the same moments, night after night — and learned the power of a planned, scripted delivery. He carried Zig’s heavy cast iron farm pump into meetings just for the chance to sit in the front row and watch him work. He followed the pricing of Earl Nightingale — raising his speaking fee every time Earl did. And he was handed Think and Grow Rich and The Strangest Secret on his very first day in sales — two years before both of their authors ended up working for him.

The episode closed the way it began — with focus. Whether it’s a golf stroke, a closing script, or a year-long sales contest, the principle is the same: stay in the moment, do the work, and let someone else hand you the trophy when it’s actually over.

Show Notes

There's a moment in every sale — every negotiation, every deal — when you can feel it.

You think: I've got this.

And sometimes, that feeling is the most dangerous thing in the room.

Ben Gay III has been in sales long enough to watch people win deals they hadn't closed yet — and lose them because of it. He's seen it happen to rookies. He's seen it happen to veterans who should have known better. And somewhere along the way, he learned a rule he has never forgotten.

Never celebrate a victory you haven't won yet.

Today, we're going to find out where that rule came from.
