Podcasting has come a long way since 2004. From iPod downloads to today’s global streaming platforms, the medium has evolved dramatically—yet we’re really just getting started. With new tools, audiences, and opportunities emerging every day, podcasting continues to grow as one of the most powerful ways to share your voice with the world.
Podcasting: From Niche Beginnings to Everyday Companion
Let’s take a quick trip back to 2004. The term “podcast” first appeared thanks to Ben Hammersley writing in The Guardian. Not long after, Adam Curry launched “Daily Source Code,” one of the early podcasts that helped define what the medium could be.
In 2005, Apple added podcasts to iTunes, making it much easier for everyone to find and subscribe to shows. Suddenly, podcasts weren’t just for techies—they were for anyone interested in stories, news, or good conversation.
When the first iPhone came out in 2007, podcasting got even more potential. At first, you still had to sync podcasts through iTunes, which was a bit clunky, but that started to change pretty quickly.
By around 2009, dedicated apps made it possible to listen to podcasts almost anywhere, anytime. This shift meant more people could tune in easily—whether heading to work, running errands, or just relaxing.
A major turning point came in 2014–2015, when Serial arrived and brought true-crime stories into the podcast spotlight. It became a huge hit, grabbing the attention of millions and showing everyone how powerful podcast storytelling could be.
Now, in the 2020s, podcasting has really hit its stride. We have audio and video podcasts, shows on every streaming platform, and plenty of ways for creators to reach listeners. No matter your interests, there’s probably a podcast out there for you. From its niche beginnings to being as mainstream as pumpkin spice lattes, podcasting keeps connecting people with stories and fresh ideas every day.
