Why I Always Do a Podcast Pre-Interview (and Why It’s on Recorded Zoom)
A podcast episode might sound effortless when it’s done well, but the truth is: the best conversations are usually supported by solid prep. That’s why I always do a pre-interview with every guest.
Here’s one important detail upfront: I don’t do pre-interviews by phone.
Because I schedule about 6 months out, it’s important that my pre-interview is a recorded Zoom conversation for two reasons:
- So I can listen back and re-acquaint myself with the guest and topic before we record the actual episode.
- So I have a clear record of what we agreed on (direction, key points, timing, expectations).
That recording becomes my reference point. When you’re booked far in advance, a lot can change, so the pre-interview gives us a clear, shared plan and lets us pick up right where we left off—without having to reconstruct the conversation later.
What the Pre-Interview Actually Does
A recorded Zoom pre-interview helps us:
-Clarify the main focus of the conversation (and what we won’t cover)
-Identify the strongest stories and takeaways
-Set expectations for pacing, structure, and timing
-Make sure the episode fits the show and serves the listener
reduce surprises, confusion, and last-minute scrambling
In other words, it’s not busywork. It’s a professional safeguard.
It Protects Everyone’s Time (Including Yours)
I’m respectful of my guests’ time, and I’m equally protective of the show’s time and production flow. When we do this step well, the actual interview is smoother, more confident, and far more valuable to the listener as well as the host and guest. It gives us time to get comfortable with each other.
It keeps the show organized, protects everyone’s time, and helps ensure the final interview is strong and on-point.
That’s the goal every single time: a conversation that feels natural, but is backed by a clear plan.
Do you do a pre-interview as a podcast host? Yes or no?
If yes (or no), what’s your biggest reason—what does it help you do (or what makes you skip it)?
