When a Podcast Guest Is Late, Boundaries Matter More Than Politeness
Every podcaster eventually faces this moment.
You’re logged in.
Your mic is live.
You’ve sent reminders.
And then, 9 minutes after the scheduled start time, a message arrives:
“I’ll be on in 5.”
This is where boundaries matter.
Showing up on time is the agreement
A recording time is not a suggestion. It’s a commitment made by both parties. When a guest misses that time without prior communication, they are not just late. They are disregarding the host’s time, preparation, and production workflow.
Podcasting may feel conversational, but it is still professional media.
Waiting teaches the wrong lesson
If you stay on the line, adjust your schedule, or squeeze them in anyway, you unintentionally teach guests that:
Start times are flexible
Reminders mean “backup alarms”
The host’s time is negotiable
That creates repeat behavior. Not just with that guest, but with future ones.
A simple, professional response
If the guest is not present at the scheduled start time, it is reasonable to end the session and require a reschedule.
No confrontation is necessary.
No explanations are required.
No apologies are owed.
A calm follow-up stating that the session will need to be rescheduled is enough.
Boundaries protect the show
Strong boundaries do not make you difficult. They make your podcast sustainable.
They protect:
Your energy
Your production schedule
Your listeners
Your sponsors
Your reputation as a serious host
Guests who respect the opportunity will respect the boundary. Those who don’t are telling you something important.
The takeaway
Professional guests show up on time.
Prepared guests communicate early.
And hosts who value their work enforce boundaries without guilt.
If you want your podcast to be treated like it matters, you have to treat your time that way first.
