I started my podcast almost by accident, and it still makes me laugh.

I’m a highly committed introvert, and my privacy matters to me. There are no pictures of me floating around the internet for a reason. I’m not shy, though, and I definitely don’t have much in the way of filters. I just prefer to keep my life off display.

So here’s how it began.

A friend of mine on Facebook, a broadcaster, asked if she could interview me. Of course, I said yes. Then, while we were on the phone, she said, “Do you mind if we just go ahead and record this while we’re talking?” Sure, why not?

Two days later she sent me a link. I got all excited, thinking, Ooh… where did she submit this? What publication is this going to be in?

I clicked the link and heard my own voice and had what we call in the Deep South a full-body frisson. I mean, chills everywhere. And not the good kind. To me, I sounded like I was about to sing Happy Birthday, Mr. President. I thought I sounded ridiculous.

So I called her and said in a shaking voice... “What the hell was that?”

She laughed and said, “Denise… that is a podcast.”

My next, still panicked question was, “What the hell is a podcast?”

She explained it. And I swear to you, I was a podcaster the next day.

Because even in that moment, I knew something: getting my voice out there was going to be huge.
