Address that question before you send your request.
The "What's In It For Me" (WIIFM) principle is fundamental to effective communication and persuasion, regardless of the platform or situation. Whether it's a website landing page, a social media post, an email marketing campaign, or a LinkedIn connection request, people are inherently asking themselves:
How will this benefit me?
Why should I care?
What problem does this solve for me?
How will this make my life easier, better, or more fulfilling?
Forget generic greetings and instead, lead with how they will benefit. Demonstrate that you've reviewed their profile and tailor your message to their specific interests, expertise, or goals. Instead of a vague request, focus on a mutual value exchange; offer relevant insights, resources, or even a fresh perspective related to their work. If you noticed something of particular interest or relevance, share it and show them that connecting with you will bring value to their work. Frame the connection as a mutually beneficial opportunity, and you'll see a significant increase in your acceptance rate and the potential for meaningful professional relationships.
Remember, people are busy. Before accepting a connection request, they'll subconsciously ask: "What's in it for me? Why should I connect with this person?" Your connection request message needs to answer that question immediately.
