What is your podcast about, and why are you doing it?
Starting a podcast is exciting, but many beginners stumble before they even hit “record.” Whether you’re planning a passion project or building a branded show, these five tips will help you lay a strong foundation and avoid the pitfalls of podfade. (Read Podfade Is a Silent Reputation Killer here)
1. Clarify Your Purpose and Audience
Before anything else, ask yourself: What is my podcast about, and who is it for?
Are you educating a niche audience, sharing stories, or building authority in your field? A clear purpose and defined audience will shape everything—from your tone and format to how you promote each episode.
Just as importantly, having this clarity will help keep your show on track as it grows. As new opportunities come your way—guests, sponsors, content ideas—you’ll be able to evaluate them against your core mission. This focus prevents your podcast from drifting off course and ensures long-term relevance and consistency.
“Core Mission? What is it? Do you know?”
Take time to define it now—because it will guide every decision you make going forward.
2. Structure Your Episodes Ahead of Time
Consistency starts with planning. Will your podcast feature solo commentary, interviews, news segments, or a combination of formats? Knowing your structure in advance helps keep content focused and production efficient.
Use a method I call “Rack and Stack”—pre-record and queue up multiple episodes before launching. Aim to have at least a month’s worth of content ready. This buffer gives you breathing room and protects against burnout or missed publishing dates.
3. Prioritize Audio Quality
You don’t need a fancy studio, but poor audio will turn listeners away. Invest in a good microphone, record in a quiet environment, and learn the basics of audio editing.
Free tools like Audacity let you clean up recordings, while services like Auphonic automatically balance levels and improve sound quality. These small steps go a long way in making your show sound professional and enjoyable.
Audacity is a versatile software for recording and editing audio on Windows, macOS, Linux and other platforms. I use it DAILY!
Auphonic is a web-based tool that uses advanced AI algorithms to automatically enhance the quality and consistency of your audio files. It’s especially useful for podcasters, but also works great for video production, audiobooks, and other spoken-word content. You can integrate it seamlessly into your workflow, and it supports multiple platforms. At just $11/month or $132/year, it’s one of the most affordable and powerful tools out there and I highly recommend it to any serious podcaster.
4. Practice Before You Publish
Before going public, take time to record a few practice episodes—even if you never publish them. Use this time to experiment with your delivery style, pacing, and transitions between segments. Practice speaking naturally (not reading word-for-word), and aim for a conversational tone that feels authentic to your brand.
Then, listen back critically. Are you rushing? Do you overuse filler words? Is your intro too long or your closing too abrupt? Use these test runs to fine-tune your format and flow.
Even better—share those test episodes with friends who will be honest, critical, and helpful. Avoid relying on family; they’ll love anything you do. What you need is feedback that pushes you to improve, not just praise.
The goal isn’t perfection—it’s comfort. The more confident and natural you sound, the more your audience will connect with you and keep listening.
5. Launch with a Strategy
Don't just upload a single episode and hope for the best. Build buzz beforehand—share previews, gather email subscribers, and prepare your cover art and descriptions. Launch with 3–5 episodes to hook new listeners and give them a reason to subscribe.
When launching your podcast, submitting to Apple Podcasts and Spotify is essential—they’re the two biggest platforms with the widest reach. But don’t stop there. YouTube (and YouTube Music) has rapidly become a top destination for podcast discovery, especially for video content, offering unmatched visibility and audience engagement. Amazon Music and Audible tap into Amazon’s massive user base and provide strong exposure for spoken-word formats. iHeartRadio is another powerful option, especially given its integration with smart speakers, radio platforms, and in-car systems.
To expand your reach even further, submit your show to highly respected podcast apps like Overcast or Pocket Casts. These apps cater to serious podcast listeners—people who are more likely to binge episodes, leave reviews, and become loyal fans. Unlike casual browsers, these users actively seek quality content and appreciate features like custom playlists and smart playback. By distributing your podcast across a diverse set of platforms and listening environments, you ensure it's discoverable by people with different devices, preferences, and habits—giving your show the strongest and most sustainable start possible.
Conclusion: Consistency is Your Superpower
Podcasting is a mix of creativity and commitment. One of the biggest challenges new podcasters face is podfade—the slow fade into silence after just a few episodes. Avoid it by planning ahead, using the “Rack and Stack” method, and sticking to a realistic publishing schedule.
Your audience is waiting—and watching. If you disappear, so do they.
You don’t have to be perfect—just be consistent. With the right preparation, your podcast can grow into something impactful, sustainable, and uniquely yours.
